Intralogistics and warehouse automation · Independent

Plan automated warehouses on solid ground. Integrate and accept the VDA5050 interface. Improve performance in operation.

From planning and tendering to acceptance and live operation, I advise companies independently on automated warehouses. For VDA5050 integrations I turn conflicting assumptions into one agreed interface, tested and documented. No ties to any equipment supplier.

Five situations I'm brought in for

Engaged for a single phase or for the whole path from concept to operation.

VDA5050 assessments

We're integrating AGVs and AMRs over VDA5050.

The interface understood, tested and accepted, with evidence both sides can check.

  • Integration Assessment
  • Acceptance Assessment
  • Interface and requirement review
  • Recorded traffic analysis
  • Deviation findings
Planning and tendering

We're planning an automated warehouse.

Sound decisions on processes, technology and suppliers.

  • Coordination
  • Ramp-up
  • Acceptance support
Operations optimisation

Our warehouse isn't reaching its potential.

Project experience

Three examples from my career

Customers are anonymised.

Project rescue · Deep-freeze producer · Belgium

Final acceptance within three months, with no penalties

Situation
An automated deep-freeze channel storage system had not reached final acceptance. Open items remained on the software and the mechanical side.
My responsibility
Took over project responsibility from the project manager and worked directly with the software and mechanical teams on every open point.
Result
All open items closed within three months. Final acceptance reached and the project closed without penalties.
Operations optimisation · Multichannel retail · United Kingdom

More than ten improvements identified and implemented

Situation
A live multi-area automated warehouse with room for improvement in process and storage efficiency and in the interaction between WMS and ERP.
My responsibility
Analysed the operation, reworked the interaction between the supplier's WMS and the customer's ERP and oversaw the implementation.
Result
More than ten actions to improve product flow and reduce labour cost, implemented and tracked against purpose-built KPIs.
M&A evaluation · AMR technology · China

Board recommendation, followed by the investment

Situation
A global intralogistics group wanted to add AMR technology to its portfolio through a partner to invest in.
My responsibility
Market analysis, shortlist against partner criteria, management interviews, site visits and hands-on evaluation of products and technology. Negotiated the cooperation agreement.
Result
Recommendation presented to the board. The group invested in the recommended partner.

LogIQ VDA5050

A separate product from LogistiXpert for projects in which AGVs and AMRs talk to their fleet controller over VDA5050.

  • Narrow down communication problems between vehicle and fleet controller.
  • Analyse protocol deviations down to the message and field.
  • Document the results in a report both sides can check when clarifying a fault together.
Findings of a LogIQ report: severity, check, vehicle, message number, field, description and recommendation for each deviation, filterable by severity and vehicle.

About me

Matthias Merz

Dipl.-Inform. (FH) · Founder of LogistiXpert

I've spent my career in automated warehouses. I commissioned and ran distribution centres in the US, led integration management globally, sold systems as Vice President Food Retail at SSI Schäfer and ran the intralogistics software portfolio for KION Group in EMEA. Since 2025 I've worked independently, based in Thailand, on projects worldwide in German and English.

Independence

  • No ties to equipment suppliers or software vendors. No commissions or referral fees.
  • Paid for the work at a fixed fee or daily rate, never for a particular outcome.
  • Conflicts declared before you appoint me. LogistiXpert also sells LogIQ VDA5050 to vehicle manufacturers and fleet-controller vendors; where that touches your project, you hear it first.
