Planning and tendering for automated warehouses

For companies planning a new automated warehouse or a major extension. I plan from your data up and write a functional tender that suppliers answer on your terms. The aim: sound decisions on processes, technology and suppliers.

Starting point

Most of the cost is committed before the first machine is ordered

Throughput, footprint and lifetime cost are largely decided in the concept and the tender. Once the layout is fixed and the contract signed, a weak assumption is paid for every year of the asset's life.

01

Sized for the average, not the peak

A layout sized against a clean average rather than the real order structure and seasonality hits a wall in the first busy week. The shortfall is structural.

02

A tender written by the supplier

When the specification comes from the supplier, proposals are only comparable with each other and the quiet assumptions favour the seller.

03

No independent view on feasibility

Concept, simulation and business case often come from the party that profits from a yes. Someone who has commissioned these systems can tell you which figures will hold on the floor.

What you gain

Decisions you can defend, before money is committed

  • A concept based on your data

Order structure, SKU profile, seasonality and growth drive the design, not an average.

  • Proposals you can compare

Every supplier answers the same functional requirement. Proposals are evaluated against criteria you agreed beforehand.

  • A throughput figure that holds

Sized for the peak and checked by someone who has taken these systems through commissioning.

Deliverables

What you receive

  • Data analysis

Order structure, SKU profile and seasonality from real data. Current process mapped, bottlenecks quantified, growth and peak scenarios defined.

  • Material-flow concept

Technology options weighed against your own profile, sized for the peak, with the trade-offs stated.

  • Layout

Facility planning and layout, building included where needed. Static throughput calculation and, through my network, dynamic simulation where the risk warrants it.

  • Functional tender

Tender documents written around your requirement. Supplier-specific documents where a shortlist is already set.

  • Proposal comparison

Structured evaluation against defined criteria, CAPEX and OPEX compared like for like, technical questions settled before signing.

  • Handover to delivery

The awarded scope handed cleanly to project management, with the open technical points documented.

Approach and collaboration

From data to a signed contract

Scoped to the decision in front of you: a concept study, a tender or the full path from analysis to award. I work as your independent planner. Simulation and specialist tasks go to experts from my network, agreed with you beforehand.

  1. Data and requirements

Order and item data, growth assumptions and constraints turned into a quantified brief.

    Step 1
  2. Material-flow concept

Technology options weighed against your profile, sized for the peak.

    Step 2
  3. Layout and simulation

Layout developed and, where the risk warrants it, confirmed by dynamic simulation.

    Step 3
  4. Tender and award

Functional tender issued, proposals evaluated, technical points negotiated, award handed to delivery.

Sales and design · Grocery wholesale · Norway

Deep-freeze case-picking system designed and contracted

Situation
A grocery wholesaler planned a deep-freeze case-picking (SCP) installation.
My responsibility
Led the sales and design process and negotiated the contract.
Result
Contract signed and the project handed over cleanly to the realisation team.

Technology: Automated shuttle storage, delayering robots, case stacking robots, WCS, pack-pattern generator.

Sales and design · Grocery retail · Germany

Multi-area automated warehouse designed, building included

Situation
A grocery retailer planned a multi-area automated warehouse including the building.
My responsibility
Led the sales and design process for the whole facility including the building and negotiated the contract.
Result
Contract signed and the project handed over to the realisation team.

Technology: Building, automated high-bay warehouse, shuttle system, pallet conveyor, multi-zone picking, AGVs, WCS.
